Habitat
Since the housing protest of 12 September 2021, the Netherlands has been talking about a housing crisis and looking for room to build 900,000 homes. That means one new home for every nine that already exist, before 2030. In the approach to this crisis and in the debate around it, the numbers, the pace and affordability dominate. And that has a downside.
The question of how we want to live in the future fades into the background, while the task is about more than a shortage of homes. The design and layout of those homes and of our surroundings will change profoundly through circularity, climate adaptation, demographics and biodiversity. And the search for how to use this whole undertaking to improve the environment we live in finds little resonance.
With Habitat, the ninth edition of TIAFF explored circular architecture, changing forms of housing, biodiverse public space, portraits of architects, ecological building methods, and the design of a living environment for animals, plants and people.
